Introducing Chat, a new community feature for all subscribers, free or paid. You can access it on the web or install the Substack app (on iOS or Android) to join in.
With Twitter being plunged into uncertain waters (not that I was an active user), I’m experimenting with a new Substack community feature called Chat. It’s a space within the Substack app for subscribers—free or paid—only, where we can talk more immediately with each other.
Very broadly, I’ll be using it to post micro messages and photos on what I’m up to, working on, thinking about that aren’t quite substantial enough to post as a letter. I’m anticipating that it might approximate something of Instagram Stories for me, if only it were easier to compose text in Stories: the sharing of more liminal moments, accompanied by thoughts that may or may not take greater hold. I think it’ll also be a good place for me to gauge your interest on a particular subject before going deeper with it, or for us to share recommendations with each other.
Within the app, you can also read my letters and keep up with all other Substack newsletters you’re subscribed to—your profile settings lets you choose whether to receive notifications via just email, or via both email and the app. I would not recommend turning on “smart notifications”, as I’m honestly not sure how that works and from what I’ve heard, it’s meant some people have missed out on new letters.
How to access Movable Worlds’ Chat via app
Download the Substack app, which is available on both iOS and Android.
Read Movable Worlds in the Substack app
Available for iOS and Android
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for the Movable Worlds Chat inside. Turn on push notifications for the app so you are alerted to join conversations as they begin. Notifications for new Chats will generally only be posted to the app, not to your inbox—unless I choose to turn that on for specific Chats. I promise to do that likely never, or at least sparingly.
Feel free to jump into my old Chats too. I read all new messages, even on old Chats. If you run into any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ. Thank you!
If you haven’t already subscribed to Movable Worlds, do it here. You have to be subscribed—either on a free or paid basis—to access the Chat feature.
For my first Chat…
I kicked it off with a photo message of one of those liminal moments I spoke of earlier, from my reporting trip in Sabah, Malaysia. This turned out to be a thread about waiting…
And here’s a thread for you:
Let’s start there. I look forward to hearing from you all!
