Making tweaks to the newsletter, introducing guest letters and paid subscriptions, and looking for feedback through a reader survey.
A table to crowd around in George Town, Penang.
Hello, hello!
As you may know, I’ve been meaning to be more intentional with this newsletter, so I just wanted to lay out some of the changes here, and what you can expect in the near future:
I plan to publish regularly here from now on (something that started in June)—at least once a month, sometimes more. I’ve found that having a space to write and share that is fully under my control, where stories don’t have to be squeezed into the confines of a sellable narrative, helps draw me back into the groove of noticing and writing when I feel unmotivated, in a way that complements my work. I’m still writing and editing elsewhere, of course, so do forgive occasional lapses, but I do want to keep this chugging along.
Since Substack has allowed the creation of sub-newsletters, I’ve separated the archive into a number of categories, which you can access on the main page in the top menu. I’m still working on putting out more letters that would fully reflect the newly focused mission of this newsletter, and hope to do that within the next few months. So please bear with me.
As a result of these changes, long-time readers will notice that the configuration of the online archive looks quite different from the letters you would have received before. That’s because I’ve consolidated past letters, and got rid of some, to make them all fit together more coherently following the—admittedly subtle—changes in direction. You should have deleted my old letters from your inbox anyway! 😆
Starting this month, I will also publish guest letters—particularly but not exclusively from Southeast Asia—at least once every two months. I’m looking to commission a couple more this year, so please reach out if you would like to write. Honestly, this newsletter was a compromise on my original idea to start an independent print quarterly! At the moment, I prefer the newsletter’s immediacy and looser format.
There is now a difference between what you can access as a free and a paid subscriber. Please consider making a paid subscription (currently at a discounted USD25/year or 2.50/month) if you would like to read them. For now, the money goes entirely to helping me pay guest writers.
A very supportive reader from India—thanks Loveleen!—recently suggested that it might be worth splitting up Landmarkings dispatches into two parts. She said she enjoys the curated readings but the number of recommendations all contained in one email can be overwhelming and could mean she doesn’t get to most of them. That’s definitely something I’ll start trying, and I may also start publishing Landmarkings more frequently than, say, every three months. Let’s see.
Considering all this, I would like to know more about you, dear readers, to better understand who I am writing to and what might be more of interest, to make sure the newsletter remains relevant to its core audience. I would be really grateful if you would fill out this reader survey. It’s fairly simple, and not all fields are mandatory, so it shouldn’t take too much time.
For more detailed info, everything you would want to know is on the About page, which I update every so often to reflect the newsletter and what I’m planning for it, so check back anytime.
Any questions or feedback, please feel free to reach out.
